I heard Ibn al-Zubayr on the pulpit at Makkah delivering a sermon: "O men! The Prophet used to say, "If the son of Adam were given a valley full of gold, he would love to have a second one; and if he were given the second one, he would love to have a third, for nothing fills the belly of Adam's son except dust. And Allah forgives the one who repents to Him."

Abu Dharr narrated: I passed by al-Rabadhah and by chance met Ab– Dharr. I asked him, "What has brought you to this place?" He said, "I was in Shaam and differed with Mu`awiyah on the meaning of (the following verses of the Qur'an): "Those who hoard up gold and silver and spend them not in the Way of Allah..." (Qur'an 9:34) Mu`awiyah said, "This verse is revealed regarding the People of the Book." I said, "It was revealed regarding us and as well as the People of the Book." (Al-Bukhari 1318)

He took the gold pieces in his hands, fidgeted with them and then said, "Wait till my storekeeper comes from the forest." 'Uma rwas listening to that and said, "By Allah! You should not separate from Talhah till you get the money from him, for the Messenger of Allah said, "The selling of gold for gold is riba except if the exchange is hand-to-hand and equal in amount; similarly, the selling of wheat for wheat is riba unless it is hand-to-hand and equal in amount; the selling of barley for barley is usury unless it is hand-to-hand and equal in amount, and dates for dates, is usury unless it is from hand to hand and equal in amount." (Al-Bukhari 1990 and 2028)

Abu l-Minhal narrated “I asked Al-Bara' bin Azib and Zaid bin Arqam about currency exchanges. Each of them said, "The (other) is better than me." (Eventually) both of them said: "The Messenger of Allah forbade the selling of silver for gold on credit." (Al-Bukhari 2033)

Every time they cool they will be returned to their original state. (All of this) for the duration of a day the extent of which is fifty thousand years, until the matters are completed between the slaves of Allah and the individual sees his path, either to the Garden or to the Hell-fire." (Muslim 1647 and 1648)

Ubadah bin al-Samit narrated “I heard the Messenger of Allah forbidding the sale of gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates and salt for salt, except when they were exchanged like for like and in equal quantities. Ubadah bin Al-Samit “The Messenger of Allah said: "Gold is to be paid for with gold, raw and coined; silver with silver, raw and coined; wheat with wheat in equal measure; barley with barley in equal measure; dates with dates in equal measure; salt by salt with equal measure. If anyone gives more or asks more, he has dealt in usury. But there is no harm in selling gold for silver and silver (for gold), in unequal weight, payment being made on the spot. Do not sell them if they are to be paid for later. There is no harm in selling wheat for barley and barley (for wheat) in unequal measure, payment being made on the spot.
